Chewy granola bars no more.

John and I went down to Saint George the other weekend ago to participate in my first bike race/ride. Now, the last time I road more than a mile was probably 4 months ago and the furthest I have ever gone is 12 miles on a mountain bike but I've been so anxious to actually use my bike for something other than errands, it didn't take too much convincing. Now, something you may or may not know about me is I'm a slightly obsessed with 2 things: knowing what time it is and knowing the weather. Weather.com is probably the third most commonly viewed website in my history. John has done wonders at teaching me how to not let weather affect activities or fun but I still can't keep myself from checking multiple places multiple times a day. So when I saw that sunny southern UT was going to be anything but on Saturday, my bad attitude and snotty demeanor started to bubble out. But we made a commitment to go so that was that. So after 4 layers on top, fleece-lined pants and bike shorts, wool socks, and my ski gloves, I was set. We started off in a group of 6 but after 2 miles, John and I peeled off on our own and never saw another biker until we reached the end. Just me and my man, my freaking rad bike, and all the 40 degree wet weather one could ask for cruising around the perimeter of Zions. It was actually super beautiful and really enjoyable (minus our frozen feet). We only did the 27 mile ride which i totally don't regret. Everything went super smoothly except at mile 26 when we thought we were at mile 20 and hunger hit me with a vengeance so John went up to a random house and asked for some food. my hero. This mom came out with a Costco sized box of Chewy granola bars and I ate 5 on the spot. Seriously, 5. Super ready to take on the last 7 miles, we turned the corner and there was the end. The moral of the story is, waiting for optimal weather is really dumb. and always take food from strangers.

*honorary note: Jed (3rd from the left) was the only one to finish the full century, coming in just over 9 hours. nut job.

  1. 40 degrees? You're kind of a sissy.

  2. That sounds so fun! I would totally do this next year with fingers crossed that the weather was a little brighter.

  3. i think the moral of that story is to not be afraid to knock on a stranger's door and request food! that made me laugh so hard. and 27 miles! my top mileage on a bike was 17 and i choose never to do that again. so good job. biking in cold weather is really hard.

  5. You're my hero. I think the furthest I ever rode a bike is 2 or 3 miles on my one speed cruiser. I am dying laughing picturing you guys knocking on some random door for food. Awesome. Also, I freak out if I don't know the time. I'm obsessed about it but funny thing, I'm not usually on time and I hate having things scheduled. Makes me feel tied down. Is that weird?
